Cooling System

Polar Automotive and Radiator is Santa Cruz County's Cooling System Specialist. We have been servicing and repairing cooling systems for over 60 years!

The most popular method of engine cooling is the liquid cooled system. The liquid we refer to is coolant, which is a mixture of 50/50 dionized water and antifreeze. Basically, the mixture of water and antifreeze prevents the coolant from freezing,  and in turn keeps the components of the cooling system clean and free of corrosion.

The cooling system cycle begins with the coolant pumping through the engine, absorbing heat from the engine combustion, and then the coolant flows into the radiator where heat is transferred to the atmosphere. The now cooled down  coolant returns to the engine to repeat this cycle all over again. Simply put, the cooling system keeps the engine temperature lower so the engine can perform at its best. Without a cooling system, we would only be able to drive our cars a few miles before the engine is ruined. That would be a bummer!

Equally important to the cooling system is the engine‚Äôs thermostat. The thermostat controls the temperature and amount of coolant that enters the radiator. When the engine is cold, the thermostat remains closed which allows the coolant to circulate in the the engine. Then the engine can warm up and eliminate hot spots. The hotter the coolant, the more open the thermostat which allows more coolant to flow through the radiator.

In general. a cooling system should be drained, flushed and filled at least every two years. However, if your driving a lot or driving in severe weather temperatures, then the cooling system should be serviced every year.

A VERY IMPORTANT WARNING:

DO NOT REMOVE RADIATOR CAP WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT!

COOLANT IS EXTREMELY HOT WHEN IT IS AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE. IF YOU TOUCH, OR SPILL  HOT COOLANT YOU WILL BURN YOURSELF.
